what is diabetes

Talk about diabetes with Dr K P Chandra

Dr Sahab bass thodi Sugar ho Gayi hai! Diabetes Specialist Doctors sometimes hear from patients, even when they are on numerous medications to help control their diabetes. As you very likely know, diabetes is a state in which there is higher than common blood sugar level in the body. The elementary problem underlying that is either reduced insulin production (the only glucose-lowering hormone in the body released from the pancreas) or lower insulin efficacy, in other words – increased insulin resistance. Or there could be a mixture of both lessened insulin production and larger insulin resistance.

Diabetes are mainly in different types:

Type 1 Diabetes – There is less insulin production in the body which results in high blood sugar levels. It is typically seen in the younger generation. People who have type 1 Diabetes are dependent on Insulin – which means that they have to take insulin for their lifetime to help maintain normal blood sugar levels and decrease the risk of hurdles in future.

Oral medications alone are not effective for these people.

Type 2 Diabetes – As claimed by “Obesity doctors” This is the one which we frequently see in mature individuals. However, now with increasing trouble with fatness, we see it in younger individuals and children as well. Here, at the start, there tends to be more of an issue with increased insulin resistance, and over some time, there tends to be decreased insulin production. People answer well to oral medications initially, but as insulin production goes lessen, they will need insulin injections. Occasionally they are required for only some time whereas some people may need it in the long term.

Gestational diabetes or pregnancy-related diabetes – “Diabetologists in Lucknow” say now, as the difficulty with diabetes are getting larger overall, we are seeing an increasing number of issues with increasing blood sugar levels in females throughout pregnancy. It is called Gestational Diabetes. If there is a primary problem with either insulin production or the body’s insulin vulnerability, the blood sugar levels can grow up in pregnancy. These typically go down to normal levels as soon after delivery, but these women are at risk of having diabetes in future. The goal for your blood sugar level in pregnancy is different from what it is when you are not pregnant. Gestational Diabetes can influence the child’s growth and also cause hurdles during delivery and recently born problems. It also increases the risk of sudden intrauterine death. It is, therefore, important that diabetes levels be maintained at normal levels during pregnancy.

Medication induced Diabetes – Some particular medications, especially steroids, can cause you to have issues with diabetes over a long period. It is always recommended to consult your doctor about how to manage sugar levels while on steroids.

Others – Some other types of diabetes have overlying symptoms of both type 1 and type 2 Diabetes.
